Description

Great grandma's chocolate cake has warm spices and a deep caramel flavor. The dense texture makes it perfect for dipping in a cup of coffee.

Ingredients
  • 1/4 pound salted butter (4 sticks)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup golden syrup
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon all spice
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • basic chocolate icing
Instructions
    1. Preheat oven to 350F
    2. Grease 10 x 3 inch cake pan and set aside
    3. In a large pot melt together butter, sugar, golden syrup and milk
    4. Remove from heat and whisk in cocoa powder
    5. Add eggs one at a time, whisking vigorously after each egg is added
    6. Add flour, baking powder, baking soda, all spice and cinnamon and stir until combined
    7. Pour batter into prepared cake pan and bake for 45 minutes or until wooden skewer inserted into the center comes out clean
    8. Let cake cool in tin for 10 minutes before turning onto a wire rack to finish cooling
    9. Once cake is completely cool ice with basic chocolate icing

If mixture is not whisked vigorously after the addition of each egg the eggs may cook in the hot mixture
